In June 2024, the French Institute's gallery space in Vilnius (Didžioji St. 1) opened an exhibition featuring works by painter Aleksandras Vozbinas (1958–2021). The exhibition showcases his paintings inspired by Parisian scenes.
Aleksandras Vozbinas participated in the "Cité internationale des Arts" artist residency in Paris four times. His last visit was in the autumn just before the pandemic. During that October, he painted vivid images of the Seine riverbanks, city streets, and Haussmann-style boulevards as they transformed with the colours of fall.
The Seine's riverbanks dominate Vozbinas' paintings: Pont Marie, Pont de Sully, and the Notre Dame Cathedral under restoration. Yet, the painter’s characteristic irony also shines through in grotesque depictions of Parisian life.
Aleksandras Vozbinas’ canvases are filled with countless charming moments of Parisian life and architecture, frozen in time. Time may have stopped for Aleksandras, but his paintings, artistic reflections, and creative legacy endure.
The exhibition at the French Institute's gallery will be open throughout the summer of 2024.
